A candidate can perform well in short topic blocks yet struggle to recognise the relevant principle once the modality changes every few minutes. A full mock exposes that switching cost, as well as timing and fatigue.
When to introduce a full FRCR Physics mock
Start with concept learning and topic blocks. Introduce short mixed sessions once two or three headings are secure, then use a full mock after broad first-pass coverage is established. An early baseline can still be useful, but a low mark may primarily show that large sections have not yet been revised.
Early preparation
Use explanations immediately and prioritise why each statement is true or false. Timing is secondary while the core mechanism is insecure.
Middle preparation
Mix previously covered headings, add optional timing and use one exam-length mock to identify pacing and broad coverage gaps.
Final preparation
Sit a representative two-hour paper without searching, notes or interruptions. Complete the review and repair work before another full mock.
How to sit a representative 40-stem paper
- Protect the session. Do not search for answers or read explanations until all five items in the current stem are committed.
- Use one uninterrupted two-hour block. The official paper tests sustained concentration as well as isolated knowledge.
- Judge every statement independently. All five can be true or all five false; do not alter a reasoned answer to create a pattern.
- Answer every item. With no negative marking, an unanswered statement is a guaranteed zero.
- Use checkpoints, not a rigid stopwatch. A quarter of the paper by 30 minutes and half by 60 minutes are useful broad checks.
Separate answered, incorrect and unanswered
A single percentage conceals the underlying problem. A candidate who answers all 200 items and misses 45 has a different revision need from a candidate who leaves 35 statements blank because the paper was unfinished.
Answered
Shows whether you completed the paper and whether pacing remained stable to the end.
Incorrect
Shows where your selected True or False judgement did not match the key.
Unanswered
Usually points to timing, interruption or difficulty committing; do not silently merge these with wrong items.
Review at statement level
Each stem contains five independently marked claims, so the review should identify the misconception in the individual statement rather than labelling the whole stem “MRI” or “radiation safety”. For every wrong or fragile guessed-correct item, choose the relevant error type.
Missing fact or definition
You did not know the quantity, mechanism, unit or regulatory role. Add one concise correction and re-test it with a fresh statement.
Reversed relationship
You knew the variables but reversed the direction, proportionality or consequence. Rewrite it explicitly as “if X increases, Y…”.
Ignored condition
The general principle was familiar, but the statement changed field strength, geometry, exposure control or another condition that altered the result.
Timing or overconfidence
You rushed, left items blank or rejected a correct principle because the True/False pattern looked unusual.
Turn the mock into recovery work
Do not sit another full paper immediately. First identify the two or three repeated mechanisms causing the most loss. Use targeted topic practice, revisit the relevant concept guide and then test the same principle with fresh mixed statements.
Re-test guessed-correct statements, not just incorrect ones.
Group errors by misconception rather than copying the original question.
Separate one-off factual gaps from repeated direction or unit errors.
Return to mixed timed practice before the next exam-length mock.
Retire an error-log entry after repeated clean retrieval, not after rereading it once.
What a mock score can and cannot tell you
A mock can show pacing, breadth, repeated misconceptions and whether you can retrieve principles without a topic label. It cannot guarantee the official outcome. The RCR standard-sets each sitting, while commercial papers and candidate groups differ.
