What is the FRCR Physics pass mark?

The RCR does not publish one permanent raw percentage for every First FRCR Physics sitting. The pass standard is set for the examination being sat, so an unofficial percentage quoted from a previous sitting should not be treated as the guaranteed threshold for a future paper.

This reflects criterion-referenced standard setting: the aim is to identify whether a candidate meets the expected standard, while allowing for differences in paper difficulty. It is not simply a fixed percentage applied regardless of the questions.

How the 200 items are marked

The paper contains 40 stems. Each stem contains 5 True/False items, so there are 200independently marked decisions in total.

Each correct True/False item scores one mark.

Each incorrect item scores zero.

There is no negative marking.

Any number of the five items in a stem may be true or false.

All five items may be true, or all five may be false.

An unanswered statement therefore cannot improve your score. Under time pressure, practise making the best supported judgement and moving on rather than leaving blanks or changing answers to manufacture a balanced True/False pattern.

Modified Angoff standard setting

The RCR states that it uses a modified Angoff method. Subject-matter experts consider each item and estimate how likely a just-passing candidate would be to answer it correctly. Those judgements are reviewed and combined to derive a standard for the paper.

The practical implication is simple: an easier paper should require a higher raw mark than a harder paper to represent the same underlying standard. That is why a permanent unofficial threshold is not a sound way to judge readiness.

What the Hofstee compromise adds

After the examination, the RCR applies the Hofstee compromise method. This brings the standard-setter judgements together with observed candidate performance within the published process. The candidate cohort and pass rate can therefore vary between sittings.

Variation does not mean that the pass mark is chosen casually after seeing the results. It means that the final standard is not reduced to one immutable percentage divorced from paper difficulty and examination performance.

Quality review after the sitting

Examination questions undergo statistical and expert review. A question that performs poorly is not automatically defective: it may be difficult but valid. However, an item can be scrutinised for factual error, ambiguity or another construction problem and removed where appropriate, with the standard adjusted so candidates are not disadvantaged.

This distinction is useful in practice too. Do not label every low-facility question unfair. Ask whether the underlying concept is clear, the key defensible and the alternatives appropriately constructed.

How to interpret a question-bank or mock score

A commercial score is useful evidence, but it is not an official pass prediction. Bank difficulty, candidate population, repeated exposure and the balance of topics all influence the percentage. A score on familiar stems is also not equivalent to a score on an unseen exam-length paper.

  • A prediction based on a very small cohort

Use answered, incorrect and unanswered separately

A raw score can hide the problem. A candidate who attempted all 200 items and made 50 incorrect judgements needs different work from a candidate who left 40 unanswered. Track completion as well as accuracy.

Review guessed-correct statements too. If you could not explain why an item was true or false, the mark is useful for the mock score but not yet evidence of secure knowledge.
